General Uses for Accumulators:
- Energy Storage Device: Accumulators are used to store potential energy in a similar manner as a battery, but without the adverse effects of losing charge over time due to sitting or cold temperatures.
- Pulsation Dampening: Accumulators are used to cushion sudden pressure spikes in a system that causes the effect know as "water hammering."
- Pump Supplementation: Accumulators can be used to help assist with pump flow allowing for smaller pumps to be used in a system reducing head and energy costs.
- Auxiliary Power Source: Accumulators store oil delivered by a pump during the working cycle. The accumulator then releases that stored oil on demand during pump dwell.
- Thermal Expansion Device: Accumulators can be used to store fluid in a system when it expands due to heat or provide fluid when the system cools.
- Fluid Dispenser (under pressure): Accumulators can also be used to dispense fluid into the system to make up for fluid loss from normal operation of components, such as valves or cylinders.
